The Group develops solutions and services across the entire value chain in three main business areas: Building & Territories (including utilities and mobility), High Voltage & Projects (covering offshore wind farms, subsea interconnections, and onshore high voltage), and Industry & Solutions (including renewable energy sources, transportation, oil and gas, automation, and more).
History
In 1879, François Borel laid the foundation of his activity by inventing a waterproof cable consisting of wire wrapped in roofing material and then covered with lead in Switzerland. In 1897, a company called Société Française de Câbles (French Cable Company) was established in Lyon, France, to produce such cables. Initially, it was a subsidiary of the Swiss company Berthoud, Borel et Cie, but in 1912, the French energy company Compagnie Générale d'Électricité (CGE) acquired a major stake. By 1925, CGE had fully absorbed the Lyon company and turned it into a cable manufacturing division called Câbles de Lyon.
In 1969, CGE acquired Alcatel, a manufacturer of telecommunications equipment including cables. In the 1970s, two more cable manufacturers were acquired. In 1980, Chandris Cables was acquired, in 1981 a share of Chester Cables, and in 1982 Kabel-und-Metallwerke. In 1982, CGE was nationalized, and in the same year the Thomson industrial group also came under state control, with its two cable factories transferred to Câbles de Lyon.
In 1986, CGE and ITT Corporation merged their telecommunications equipment divisions into a joint venture registered in the Netherlands under the name Alcatel NV; their cable operations were also merged under the name Alcatel Cable. In the following years, several cable manufacturers in Europe were acquired, and in 1991 Canada Wire and Cable, the largest wire and cable manufacturer in Canada, was purchased.
In 2000, Alcatel Cable separated from Alcatel NV and became Nexans. In June 2001, Nexans shares were listed on the stock exchange. The company’s revenue for 2002 was 4.3 billion euros.
In 2008, Madeco became the largest shareholder by selling its assets in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia to Nexans.
In 2012, Nexans completed the acquisition of Australian cable manufacturer Olex, becoming Nexans Olex.
It is the second-largest cable manufacturer in the world after Prysmian SpA. In 2017, the Group operated in 34 countries with more than 26,000 employees and approximately 6.4 billion euros in sales.
